THE PERSONAL LEDGER IN PRACTICE

How to Use:

Every night, determine whether you kept to each principle. If you did, put a check or zero in the correct box. If you broke a principle, write a 1 in the box. If you broke it twice that day, you will write a 2, and so on.

At the end of each week, determine the total for each separate principle. The better you keep the principles, the lower your total number will be at the end of the week. Zero represents a perfect score. As time passes and your subconscious accumulation traces get stronger, you will notice that your total numbers will diminish.

NOTES SECTION : You will notice a section for notes in the Personal Ledger's. If you break a principle during the week, try to determine why it happened. This way, you will be able to trace every event back to its source.

Ask yourself the following three simple questions:

  • Where was I when I broke the principle?
  • What was I feeling when I broke the principle?
  • What was I doing when I broke the principle?

There are only one word choices in the Notes section for each time you break a primary principle. This forces you to be precise and insures that you will not have to write a long, arduous analysis. You will be amazed at how much these simple notes teach you about yourself and eating habits.

PURPOSE OF A PERSONAL LEDGER:

A simple Personal Ledger system is effective in helping you become more aware of what you are eating. Many of my clients honestly believed that they hardly snacked between meals. Others genuinely thought they were following a healthy lifestyle. After filling out Personal Ledgers for just a few weeks, each one came back to me and revealed how unaware they really were of their true eating patterns.

A Personal Ledger achieves the following purposes:

  • It records your daily eating, drinking and exercise regimens. 
  • It is an excellent way to keep track of your progress. It is an indication of whether you are progressing, stagnating or regressing — and at what speed.
  • The Notes section enables you to find the source of the delay as well as the obstacles which may be preventing your progress.
  • It will motivate you and keep you focused. It works in much the same way as a star chart. Only instead of stickers as a prize, the reward is looking and feeling your best! The Personal Ledger creates a challenge and it tests your resolve. Soon your sense of self respect will outweigh your cravings, whims and moods.

Now, please don’t worry! I am not suggesting that you keep a detailed and boring ledger requiring tremendous effort and originality. In most cases, all you will need to do is write a number in a box
